Families and teams 2011

Alixe Palacios - Murray Coates and his canadian team built her house

Alixe’s family has been living in Campo Aceval, 500 km from Asuncion. Her husband, Carlos, works on a ranch (Estancia) 130 km from their home in Campo Aceval. He comes home only once a month to see his family. Alixe has three sons Alexis (19) who is in College near Asunción, Aníbal (12) is going to boarding school and the youngest Abdias (2).

Alexis mother, Ines, is living and working in Spain. When the family has a own home, she will come from Spain to live with them and help her daugther to raise her children. So, Alixe can continue studying to give her children a better life. The sons will have better oportunities for studying and getting a good job.

Murray's team built a Hábitat level 3 house for Alixe and her family with 2 bedrooms and a living room. In only two weeks the foundation, cesspool and septic tank were digged out. And digging the cesspool was a task done by the "special task crew" because it filled with water continuously. At the end of the trip the hollow brick walls were built , the floor filled and tamped and the masons started to rise the roof. Seeing that on the day of the dedication was a moving experience for the whole team and the family, going along with some shedded tears.

Rosa and Bruno - John Kim and his team helped building a dream

Rosa and Bruno were living in the house of her mother since they were married. They shared the kitchen and the bathroom with her parents. To become a teacher Rosa studied in the evenings and was working at daytime. It took them the last 10 years to save enough money to buy a little property to make a dream come true: To have a house they can call home and raise their son. Osmar had his eighth birthday when John Kim's team from Canada was helping  to built the new house for the family.

In two weeks in May the little group of seven worked hard to built a Hábitat house level 2 with kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. They worked hand in hand with the masons and the family. The homeowner Bruno and Mike from the team were digging the cesspool in an amazing pace. At the day of the dedication the brick walls were all up and cleaned, shining in the sun. The dream coming true was celebrated in the shadow of the mango trees, with paraguayan live music and highlighted by a dancing mason.

More than a built for Donna and her team

For the team members of Donnas group this was a special trip. Six teenagers, some with their mothers, came back to discover their roots, as they were adopted from Paraguay and Ecuador. They build not only a house, but also a very special connection to the family of Florencia, Nelson and their three sons. The family was still living with Florencia's mother and their biggest wish was to have a house of their own with a garden and enough space to raise three boys.

With Habitat the wish became true and they now live in a little brick house with two bedrooms and a garden big enough to play for the kids. The team was helping to build the house for one week, digging foundations and the new septic system. Carrying big rocks for the foundation and bricks for building the walls was one of the tasks during their hard days of work. But the hard work was always accompanied by lots of fun and playing with the kids of the family. The teenagers of this team not only found their roots in Paraguay, they also found another family and they will sure be coming back to visit their paraguayan family again.
