| MONDAY, OCTOBER 5: WORLD HABITAT DAY |
| Since 1985, the General Assembly of the United Nations has designated World Habitat Day as the first Monday in month of October with the objective of calling attention to the growing population and the inadequate living conditions that millions of people suffer from, located all around the world. |
World Habitat Day looks to stimulate financial advances, the politics, and the legal documents that facilitate the access to better living conditions in regards to planning, distribution, and the reversion of the living conditions of the various families. This year, the celebrations center on the theme of improving the urban planning in which the cities are able to administrate and reduce the impact of the climate change, the financial crisis, and the urban poverty.
In Paraguay
The access to housing is a universal right and is declared in the National Constitution of Paraguay (Article 100). When we refer to the quantity, the Financial Agency of Development estimate that there is a deficit of over 465,000 houses, with an annual increase of 15,000 houses each year. Never the less, when we consider the increase of the amount of people moving from the country to the city, there will be even less work opportunities and an even bigger increase in the amount of poverty. It is possible to suppose that the percentage of the deficient housing has increased to 745,000 families.
If we estimate the average family consists of four members, almost 3 million Paraguayans will be confronting serious difficulties in their living conditions and resources.
In regards to the quality of living, the right to a decent home is closely linked with the things that they lack like: communication, transportation, or access to public services. The access to water in the rural zones is a huge concern, along with the service of garbage collection.
Creating public policies over the living conditions
The publication of Human Rights 2008 talks about the right to living in a decent condition: A state policy needs to be enforced in regards to the living condition which gives form to a national system with the capacity to integrate financial plans and the mechanisms of access to affordable living and territory. It is to say that there needs to be a political advance towards improving the housing theme. It is time that the address this issue in the country”.
Looking to advance this national plan that appears to grow stronger in our country. On October 8th and 9th, a forum will take place over the housing situation and habitat. It is an event that will last two days and is free to the public, which will be located in the Arquetecture and Design School of the National University of Asuncion. The Intersectorial Table invites several different groups to this meeting: social organizations, public figures, cooperatives, construction companies, non-profits, international organizations, among others.
Make your world a home
Habitat for Humanity has created a campaign in all their regions with a sensibility campaign over the importance of adequate housing. Also en Paraguay, from the National Office, they are calling everyone to the campaign: teachers, students, workers, social organizations, etc where they are compromising with the masons or “Albañiles” with this campaign, to help where the need is the greatest.
They are other ways in which you can help out as well from the donation of materials for the all of the work to the voluntary work in the construction of the house, as well as by giving support to the recipient families. Also every person can learn and understand why the habitat and the environment or community where they live could possibly affect his/her current and future living conditions.
Habitat for Humanity declares “Albañil” to each person that compromises to the campaign of erradicating inadequate housing across the world. |
