FIRST COLORADO AFFILIATE VISITS THE COUNTRY
The first brigade of volunteers, composed of affiliates from the state of Colorado, arrived on October 4th with the intention of helping a Paraguayan family build their own home
This brigade of 8 people was a diverse group that contained employees of Habitat for Humanity of Eagle and Lake Counties, donors to Habitat, Habitat board of director members, business men, and directors of various non-profits in the United States. For some, this was their first voluntary experience with Habitat for Humanity.
Saturina de Villaba was the family that was chosen for this build. Saturnina (30) works as a teacher and her husband Ramon (36) work as a chofer with a private business. Together, they two have two children: Camila (6) and Juan (9). Before they owned their own house, the married couple was renting their house in the zone of Benjamin Aceval.
The group worked on the house for 5 days, from October 5th to October 9th. As soon as the group met the family, the family welcomed the group with open arms. Both the group and the family worked energetically with the masons in order to complete the scheduled work plan: create the foundation and then build until the roof. In those days, the family treated the group like they were royalty. Each day, the group learned something about the culture of Paraguay, from typical plates to traditional customs.
Sadly, on October 12th, the group had to leave in order to go back to their daily lives. However, the masons and the family continued to work on the house until it was finished. After renting a house for 10 years, the Villalba Family is now moving into their own house, consisting of 2 bedrooms with the installation of basic services like running water and electricity.
This recent visit confirmed the alliance that has been made between Habitat for Humanity Paraguay and with over 30 affiliates in Colorado. Morever, their support has helped create a rotating fund for the project entitled “Habitat Adecuado para el Educator” or “Adequate Housing for the Educator”. This project will facilitate over 400 housing solutions in only 3 years. In addition, the Colorado group has compromised to make an annual visit to Paraguay through the Global Village Program.
Finally, Habitat for Humanity would like to thank their visitors from Colorado: Amanda Precourt, Kelley Brupbacher, Martha Brassel, Leanna Harris, Lorenzo Harris, Brian Judge, Corecy Lamothe and Emily Peyton.
